FRYVOLOUS runs off with a 20 3/4 length victory
in the Bob Magness Derby (G2)
DELAWARE PARK (Tuesday, July 3, 2007) Ten 4-year-old colts looked to stretch out to a mile and a quarter for the first time in their lives in the $40,000 Bob Magness Derby (G2). You never know for certain if they are going to go the distance until they give it a try. Some horses prove they can cover the ground while others show they prefer the shorter distances. One horse proved without a shadow of a doubt that 1 ¼ miles was no problem - Fryvolous, bred and owned by Dianne Waldron.
Under jockey Oliver Castillo, Fryvolous broke well from post position 1. It set him up for a perfect ground saving trip on the rail. He went to the lead stalked closely by The Last Danse. Olly and favorite Gimme A Break were also forwardly placed while Anne Seymour's Sey Spottsproof lagged at the back of the pack. After a half mile, Fryvolous still held a ½ length advantage over The Last Danse with Gimme A Break moving into third. After a mile, Cre Run's grey colt took over second when The Last Danse began to tire. He came on the outside of Fryvolous and it looked to be a 2-horse race, but Gimme A Break was no match for the bay colt. Fryvolous put away his rival and stretched out his frame, increasing his lead with every stride. At the same time, the come-from-behind runner Sey Spottsproof made a significant move leaving the far turn. The winner was never in question as Fryvolous won by a widening margin in a time of 2:18.03. Gimme A Break held onto second with Sey Spottsproof nabbing third away from Cromwell. Bush Hog, The Last Danse, Ordination, Chrysler, Makazin and Olly rounded out the field.
Fryvolous has been showing steady improvement, and this is by far his biggest win. He broke his maiden in February 2007 at Sam Houston and then finished sixth in the Texas Six Shooter (G3), but seems to be coming into his own now that he's back at Delaware Park. Overall, his record now stands at 2/11(3-2-2)1-1, $45,074. He is the latest Dormane son out of the iron mare Fryga. Dormane is the leading sire in France and has stakes winners all over the world. Waldron has crossed him numerous times with the multiple Darley winner Fryga. Previous matings have produced Darley Champions Frynch and Frynge Benefit.
This wraps up the colt/gelding division of the Triple Crown with Gimme A Break, The Last Danse and Fryvolous each winning a leg. The bonus waits until next year.

ROLLY POLLY brings her earnings to $129,000+
after winning the Cre Run Oaks (G2)
DELAWARE PARK (Tuesday, July 3, 2007) Rolly Polly has already shown more than once that she is a tough, gutsy filly that's determined to win. She didn't need to prove that anymore to anyone, but apparently no one told her. In the Cre Run Oaks (G2), she overcame stumbling at the start to win the third leg of the filly Triple Crown.
The 5 other fillies came out cleanly in the $40,000 stakes. Caviyar went to the lead followed closely by Scoot and Kittilina. Rolly Polly recovered from her bad break and settled into fifth. After ¾ of a mile, Caviyar still had the advantage over Kittilina and Scoot while Rolly Polly moved up to fourth. Midway around the far turn, Kittilina, running for the first time for new owner Terry Andreasen, moved to the lead with Rolly Polly and Joseph Rocco, Jr. closing the gap. Scoot held for third while Caviyar began to weaken. Driving to the wire, Rolly Polly determinedly wore down Kittilina, passed her and began to edge away. She won by 1 length and covered the 1 1/8 miles in 2:05.90. Kittilina had to settle for second with Coast To Coast Racing's Scoot in third. The top three were followed by Caviyar, AF Gelda and Rubie Rose.
Last year's champion 3-year-old filly, Rolly Polly now has 7 wins (6 stakes) and 2 seconds (both stakes) in 10 starts, and her earnings top $129,000. Bred and trained by Loren Nichols of Trackside Farm, she was purchased by Ken and Nancy Blewett right before her win in the Texas Yellow Rose (G3). That makes her a 2/3 winner of the filly Triple Crown. The stallion Falina Des Fabries sired not only the winner, but also the place and show horses. Rolly Polly is out of the *Negor mare SS Nellie Bly who has also produced the winner Johnny B Goode.
